How to Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Dangers of CO Monoxide
Every year, we hear about terrible tragedies concerning carbon monoxide poisoning and often it is related to an automobile. This is something that can be avoided by following a few simple tips and by being aware of the warning signs. Here at Harper Collision Center, we are happy to be bringing you some valuable information about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that is emitted by running vehicles and can swiftly cause you to become disoriented, seriously ill or even take your life. It is especially dangerous, because most victims of this dangerous gas don't even know they're breathing it until it's late.

Your car can cause carbon monoxide poisoning
How Can I Be Safe from It?

•  Ensure that you have working carbon monoxide detectors in all areas of your home, but most especially in your garage or car port. Check batteries twice annually and replace detectors every 6-10 years.

•  Always clear your car's tailpipe in inclement weather. If your tailpipe is clogged with snow, ice, dirt of other types of debris, carbon monoxide will leak into the passenger compartment of your vehicle.

•  Never warm up a vehicle in your garage or car port.

•  Never leave a vehicle running in your garage or car port, not even with your garage door open.

Check your exhaust
•  If you have a vehicle with a keyless ignition, you must always double-check it to make 100% certain that the vehicle has been completely turned off. Remember, just because you take the key fob with you, it does not necessarily mean that the vehicle is no longer running.

•  Never leave anyone inside a running car while removing snow or ice off the vehicle.

•  People can often forget not to turn off their vehicles in stressful moments, even though it is basically common sense. So, always proceed while thinking twice and don't rush through the process.

•  Keep your car locked at all times and be sure that your keys and/or remote are never within the reach of children. Kids should always be instructed to never play or hide in any vehicle at any time.

Don't be part of a tragic story by following these suggestions, because safety is surely something we should always have in the forefront of our minds, whether it's here in Knoxville, TN or anywhere else on the planet. Carbon monoxide poisoning is avoidable, so avoid scenarios that might lead to inhaling this dangerous gas.
