Car Paint Touch-Up Repair Tips

Feel like your car needs a little touch-up? Maybe you’ve noticed the paint has chipped due to normal wear and tear. Although it most likely doesn’t need a new paint job, if the chip is smaller than a pencil eraser, consider using touch-up paint to repair the damage. It’s relatively easy and the paint can be found in automotive stores, dealers and the Internet.

  • Not sure which color to use? Consult your dealer to find the right color match. You can also locate the paint code number on the firewall, according to wikihow.com, which is the piece of sheet metal separating the engine from the passengers.
 
  • After you’ve chosen your paint colors and gathered your supplies, always practice off the vehicle, such as on a piece of scrap metal, before starting any touch-ups on your vehicle. You can also apply the paint to an area of the car that isn’t visible.

  • Notice you have some paint on your skin? It can easily be removed with paint thinner. Then thoroughly wash with soap and water.
 
  • Store touch-up paint in a cool, dry place. Do not leave the paint in your car. Putting it in the refrigerator will help it last longer, but make sure not to freeze it!
