How to Deal with Holiday Rush Traffic

Black Friday shopping has passed and it's always a crazy time in Sacramento, CA, but that doesn’t mean that holiday traffic has slowed. Office parties, AutoBody-Review.com How to Deal with Holiday Rush Trafficrushing around to buy last-minute gifts and long journeys to grandma’s house—the holidays are some of the busiest times of the year to be on the road.

That usually means more car accidents. According to the Highway Loss Data Institute, auto accident claims during the month of December increase by approximately 20 percent compared to the rest of the year.

As we gear up for the busy holiday season ahead at Kniesel's Collision Center - 18th Street, here are some tips on how to best cope during the mad rush while still being safe on the roadways:

Plan ahead: Map out where you are going in advance using a navigation system and leave yourself extra time to reach your ultimate destination. This is especially important if you’re driving in an unfamiliar location for long hours. Also, try to avoid peak traffic times whenever possible.

Be prepared:

Tune up your car in advance of your journey and carry an emergency kit with you just in case. Count on there being heavy traffic along the way and remind yourself to be flexible, whether that means taking rest stops every so often or an alternate route.

Get your rest: It may sound obvious, but getting a good night’s sleep can make all the difference when you’re stuck in gridlock. It will help you stay calmer on the road and better deal with busy traffic, noisy children in the car and aggressive drivers.

Be courteous: Make a conscious effort to share the road with other drivers. Follow the speed limit, keep a safe distance between your car and the one ahead, and drive defensively. Many drivers are rushing around and have little patience. Do your best to avoid getting frustrated at other drivers and maintain your patience.

Stay calm: When you’re dealing with traffic jams and find that you’re starting to lose your cool, remember to breathe. Take long, deep breaths and then exhale slowly. Listening to soft or low music, an audio book or reciting a favorite saying to yourself can all help minimize stress.

By following these simple tips, you’ll have a more pleasurable drive and keep your family safe during the holidays.
