Driving in the Sun Can Be a Glaring Problem

AutoBody-Review driving in the sun can be a glaring problemDriving on a nice sunny day and cruising around to see some scenery is always a delight, but it can also create a hazard when a driver's sightlines are affected in any way by glaring sunlight.

At Service King Red Rock, we have heard about car accidents that have been caused by weather and other conditions and sun is one of these. During a sunny day in Las Vegas, NV driving can be difficult, especially if you don't have sunglasses or if you're driving directly into the sun.

It can happen before you realize it. You're coming around a bend and suddenly, you're traveling from shade to bright sunlight. The sun is blinding you and you're still trying to drive your car safely. It is a scary moment indeed and one that can lead to a collision if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time when the sun affects your visibility.

The most dangerous times for driving in the sun are sunset and sunrise. Many accidents happen during those periods, so be extra careful when you're driving during sunsets and sunrises. Often drivers blinded by the sun will either slow down abruptly or stop completely, which is extremely dangerous and potentially fatal.

So how can you properly protect yourself  when driving into the sun? Here are some tips:

  • Buy some polarized sunglasses. This technology has improved significantly in the last few years and are excellent for reducing glare considerable.
  • Always use your sun visor to block out the sun.
  • Avoid storing items on the dashboard.
  • If you're having a problem seeing the road clearly, use lane markings to guide you.
  • Rarely will your visibility be ideal while driving, but if motorists are aware and make the appropriate adjustments, they can diminish any additional risks that come with poor visual conditions.
  • Don't tailgate. Tailgating is always a bad idea but it's even worse when people are driving into the sun. With the sun in your eyes, it can be difficult to see what the car ahead of you is doing, so give them ample space.
  • Drive with your headlights on, so that other drivers and pedestrians can see you. (That's right, drive with your lights on during the day.)
  • Always keep your windshield clean, inside and out.
  • Check your windshield for cracks and/or pitting.
