Getting Pulled Over: What to Do

Most of us try to drive safely and properly, but despite our best efforts we make mistakes. Getting pulled over for a traffic or moving violation is a nerve-wracking experience that spikes the heart rates of even the steeliest drivers. Common sense and the ability to form complete sentences can go out the window with your license and insurance card. Sometimes, it’s unclear what you even did to get pulled over!

1. Pull your car safely off the road – When you realize you’re being pulled over, activate your turning signal to indicate you’re looking for a spot to stop, preferably a wide, well-lit area—for your safety and the officer’s. Turn on your hazard lights, roll down your window, disengage the engine, and keep your hands visible.
2. Relax, and keep your answers short – Try your best to remain calm and keep your answers short and factual. Honesty is typically the best policy—but be careful not to implicate yourself. You always have the right to remain silent. Follow the directions given by the office. If he or she asks to search your car, you may politely refuse. Officers are not allowed to search the interior of your vehicle without cause, such as the smell of alcohol or drugs or visible weapons or illegal objects.
3. Getting your ticket – If you’re unlucky enough to be written a ticket, politely accept the ticket, ask if you are free to go, and be on your way. This is not the end of the process—it’s the beginning. You can always contest your ticket if you feel you weren’t in violation of the law.
