The World's Worst Gas Guzzlers

Mention the term "gas guzzler" and what vehicles come to mind? Usually it is the stereotypical Hummer or exotic high-end cars. However, there are automobiles with low gas efficiency in every class of vehicle, from small compacts to SUVs. Here at Service King West Sacramento, we have broken this list down into five categories, so that you can know the worst gas guzzling vehicles, based on type.

Don’t be embarrassed if you drive one. Just understand that you might be paying between $4,250 and $9,500 more in fuel costs over the next five years compared to the average new vehicle, which gets 25 miles per gallon, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The term gas guzzler became popular in the late 1970s. Congress established The Gas Guzzler Tax as part of the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The intent was to discourage automakers from manufacturing fuel-inefficient vehicles. The tax is assessed on new cars that do not meet certain fuel economy levels. So, in short--less fuel economy equals higher taxes.

Although auto manufacturers are bringing more fuel-efficient cars to the market, there is still a wide variety of gas guzzlers being made. With that in mind, here are some of the most offensive gas guzzlers on the planet today:

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Sports car

With an MSRP between $443,800 and $535,500, you might not see a vehicle like this on the road very often, if ever, but the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is one of the top ones on our list.

The two-seater all-wheel drive vehicle gets a combined 12 MPG (10 city/17 highway). This new super sports car can accelerate from zero to 60 in just three seconds and reach a maximum speed of close to 220 miles per hour.

Chevrolet SS has a 6.2 liter V8 and 415 horsepower

Upscale/luxury sedan

This rear-wheel drive four-door sedan has an overall 17 MPG (12 city/23 highway). With a $46,575 MSRP, the Chevrolet SS has a 6.2 liter V8 and 415 horsepower.

Nissan Armada

SUV

If you need to cart around the kids, pets, athletic gear and everything else you could possibly need, the Nissan Armada will certainly hold it all. The SUV has a $37,590 to $54,950 MSRP and gets an average of 13 overall MPG (9 city/18 highway).

 5.5 L, eight-cylinder Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 S

Station Wagon

The 5.5 L, eight-cylinder Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 S 4matic station wagon gets 18 MPG (15 city/21 highway). Unlike a typical station wagon, it has 577 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 60 in about 3.5 seconds with an MSRP of $104,300.

Mitsubishi Lancer

Small Car

The Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the least fuel-efficient vehicles in the small car category with an overall MPG of 25 (17 city/4 highway). It has an MMRP of $17,595 to $23,495. The four-door compact sedan is known for its value and warranty, according to Kelley Blue Book information.

If you own one of these gas guzzlers, hopefully you enjoy driving it, because obviously it will cost you an arm and a leg for several years to come. Here in West Sacramento and all over CA, we see many of these thirsty beasts all the time. But fear not, because other alternative fuels and less thirsty vehicles are on the way!
